Botox® Cosmetic is the treatment of choice for dynamic wrinkles. It has become the most popular and safe, non-surgical cosmetic procedure performed today. This therapy involves injecting small amounts of the purified protein into the facial muscles responsible for movement associated with lines and wrinkles primarily in the upper face. This injection relaxes the muscle, thus drastically reducing the appearance of the associated lines and wrinkles. After treatment, the overlying skin remains smooth and unwrinkled, while the untreated facial muscles contract in a normal fashion, allowing normal facial expression to be unaffected. No sedation is needed, and you can resume normal activities immediately. Results typically last for three to six months. The most common areas that Botox® Cosmetic is used are the lines between the eyes, forehead wrinkles, crow's feet, and on occasion around the mouth. Moreover, this product is useful for controlling excessive sweating of the underarms. This FDA approved, purified protein has been in use for over 20 years in medical practice in the field of ophthalmology for the treatment of several muscular eye disorders including blepharospasm and stabismus. In addition, neurologists have more recently utilized Botox® in the treatment of certain types of headaches. The cosmetic use of this product began in the early 1990's with specific use for wrinkle treatment of the upper face. |
