A wide variety of cosmetic skin care and anti-aging procedures are available in the US today. According to the ASPS data, dermal filler injections rank as the number two procedure after Botox. During the initial consultation for filler treatment, the provider will discuss the pros and cons of various filler options, including the recovery aspect of these procedures.
While facial filler injections typically do not involve any significant recovery or downtime, the patient should have a clear idea about the recovery process and any precautions that they may be required to take following the treatment. The first goal of the treatment provider should be to help the patient make an informed choice.
Vein treatment and skin care professional Dr. Gregg Reger of Reger Vein and Skin Specialists provides FDA approved dermal filler procedures to patients in Spring, TX, The Woodlands, and surrounding locations.
Immediate Post-Treatment Phase
Almost immediately after the injection procedure, the patient will be able to notice the early cosmetic effects of the filler injections. As the filler gel is injected into the deeper tissue layers, it works quickly to add volume and plump the skin in a subtle manner to minimize the effect of facial wrinkles and fine lines.
The initial post-treatment bruising and swelling will vary depending on the type of medical spa dermal filler administered, and the number of sites and injections involved. Swelling and bruising in most patients will be eliminated in less than a week. The patient may be instructed to use ice therapy or cold compresses in the first 48 hours to mitigate the swelling.
Following the injection procedure, the patient will be asked to refrain from lying down for about four hours. The soft tissue filler will settle in the targeted areas during this time, and will not spread to unintended sites. The treatment provider will also advise the patient to avoid rubbing or massaging the injection areas for 24 hours.
After a day’s gap, the provider may permit the patient to wear makeup to camouflage the redness and swelling. But certain types of cosmetics containing alcohol may have to be avoided for some time. Patients who smoke will be required to stop the habit for at least a few days before and after the injectable treatment. This will minimize the risk of poor healing.
The patient may also be required to refrain from taking blood thinning drugs such as aspirin for two to three days. It is prudent to avoid sun exposure for several weeks after the injections. When going outside, the patient should apply a sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher.
Retreatment and Results
In a few cases, a follow up treatment to fill any facial wrinkles or creases that could not be successfully addressed in the first procedure may be recommended. However, in most cases, the results of a single in-office dermal filler skin care procedure will last for about six months to a year.
