Visible spider and varicose veins are not typically causes for medical concern, but many men and women have them cleared from the skin for aesthetic reasons. At Reger Vein and Skin Specialists, we offer multiple therapies for the clearance of spider and varicose veins to restore your confidence in your skin with no downtime.
What Causes Spider Veins and Varicose Veins?
Visible veins underneath the skin typically fall into two categories:
- Spider veins are small, dark clusters of red or purple veins that appear to branch out like spider legs.
- Varicose veins are larger and tend to twist, bulge, and protrude from the skin.
As blood flows against gravity from the feet back up to the heart, having poor circulation can cause the blood to pool back into the veins, causing them to bulge and stretch. This results in the development of spider and varicose veins. These vascular conditions are common and can be safely and permanently removed from the legs, ankles, and face using state-of-the-art technology and sclerotherapy.
Sclerotherapy for Spider Veins
One of the most popular and effective treatments for spider vein clearance is minimally-invasive sclerotherapy. This treatment involves injecting a sclerosing solution directly into affected veins, disrupting the vessel walls and causing the veins to seal. This redirects blood flow into healthy veins, and eventually the treated veins are removed by the body and replaced with healthy tissue.
Endovenous Thermal Ablation for Varicose Veins
Endovenous thermal ablation creates a tiny point of entry in the skin that typically does not require a suture. A thin laser fiber is then inserted and positioned in the targeted vein. A small pulse of laser or radio wave energy is then emitted, heating the vein and causing it to close. The body then eventually removes the vein. This advancement in vascular medicine is a safer, less risky alternative than extensive vein stripping surgery and carries no downtime.
Ambulatory Phlebectomy for Larger Varicose Veins
In cases where varicose veins do not qualify for endovenous thermal ablation, ambulatory phlebectomy may be used to remove larger varicose veins. This technique removes varicose veins by slowly teasing them through small slits in the skin. Stitches are usually not required.
