One of the best approaches to treating damaged, wrinkling skin is to stimulate new tissue growth. This can be accomplished using chemical peels, abrasive powders or crystals that strip away the epidermis or laser energy. The latter is considered one of the safest and most effective methods because it gently heats the epidermis and affects it without damaging the lower dermal layers.
Laser resurfacing is an outpatient procedure, with most patients noticing positive results after a single treatment session. We recommend this type of skin rejuvenation procedure for those who are concerned about age-related wrinkling, acne scars, liver spots and uneven skin complexion.
How Laser Energy Treats the Skin
Lasers deliver a precise wavelength of light. Depending on the material that the beam strikes, the energy may be absorbed or may pass right through the material. This is similar to how sunlight passes right through the atmosphere without heating it up directly.
Considering the skin, each layer has its own density and color tone. In other words, each will likely absorb heat energy delivered by a specific wavelength of light.
A laser can be calibrated to deliver short energy bursts that penetrate right through the epidermis, or it can be calibrated to remove the epidermis while at the same time gently heating the tissues that lie beneath.
During laser resurfacing, the energy heats up and affects the epidermis. The lower skin layers are heated just a bit, and this stimulates collagen production. The skin will build a new layer of epidermis that is much healthier and even-toned than the layer that was removed.
What to Expect During Treatment
At Reger Vein and Skin Specialists, we first schedule a consultation with our client and look closely at the areas of concern. Depending on the depth of the scars or the thickness of the wrinkles, we will create a customized procedure that targets one layer of tissue after another, but the procedure will only use calibrated energy wavelengths that are absorbed by the tissue layers requiring treatment.
The laser lamp is flashed in short bursts, making it easy to control the amount of energy absorption in each layer of tissue. Treating a small area of the face takes only about 30 minutes, while a full facial treatment may last about two hours.
Our clients can resume their normal activities without much delay. In most cases, a single treatment is sufficient to reduce the appearance of age spots and minor scars. The treatment is repeatable at regular intervals, but most of our clients report positive results lasting for many months.
