Varicose is a common problem among women, but may also affect men. People in the age group of 30 to 70 are usually affected by this condition. It causes the veins in the affected area of the legs to swell and bulge, looking much larger than spider veins.
An experienced vein and skin care specialist can help to determine the extent of the problem through physical examination and an ultrasound test.
Varicose veins do not necessarily cause pain or discomfort in all patients. However, if the patient’s veins turn blue, purple or red, they should see a vein doctor because these are signs of varicose veins. Reger Vein & Skin Specialists, led by Dr. Gregg Reger who has an experience of more than 20 years in the field, provides varicose vein treatment to patients in Spring, TX, The Woodlands, and surrounding locations.
Every third adult in the US is known to suffer from varicose veins in some form. High risk group includes women, especially those with multiple children or those who are overweight or obese. Menstrual cycles and standing or sitting in the same position for long are two of the specific causes for pain and discomfort with varicose veins.
Symptoms of the condition include:
- The veins in the legs turn blue, purple, or red
- Veins become twisted and bulged, looking like cords
- Affected areas can become painful and heavy
- Stinging or burning sensation, muscle cramping, throbbing and swelling in the lower legs
- Symptoms get worse when one stands or sits for too long
- Affected area becomes itchy or painful
- Veins can bleed
- Skin loses its color
There are other symptoms that are not as common as the ones described. These include hardened veins, changing color of the veins, inflamed skin or ulcers around ankles. These could mean the disease is more serious.
Symptoms of Phlebitis
Constant pain due to varicose veins can lead to worsening of the symptoms during the day. Wearing compression socks or keeping the veins elevated can bring relief during these times. Sometimes, the veins may experience clotting which can cause them to become hard, warm, painful and discolored.
These symptoms give rise to a condition called phlebitis. Though uncomfortable, it is a temporary condition that gets better with time. The condition is anyway limited to the veins on the surface. It does not lead to deep vein thrombosis.
Veins affected by this disease can sometimes bleed or burst due to some minor trauma. If this is coupled with ulceration or skin tear, it could be a more severe case of the disease. At this time, the patient is advised to consult a vein expert so that a physical examination and an ultrasound test can be performed to determine the severity of the problem. The doctor will ask for the medical and family history of the patient in order to understand all the risk factors.
