A number of vein treatments are available today, which can successfully eliminate the appearance of spider veins and varicose veins from the affected areas. While spider veins can be treated with an injectable procedure called sclerotherapy, more conspicuous varicose veins can be treated with endovenous laser procedure or ambulatory phlebectomy.
These procedures are minimally invasive, involving either injections or very tiny 1mm incisions. No sutures are required to close these tiny openings. Therefore, vein treatments will typically involve no specific downtime, and the patient can quickly return to their normal activities after the procedure.
During the initial consultation, the vein treatment specialist will discuss all aspects of the procedure, including recovery. Reger Vein and Skin Specialists, led by Dr. Gregg Reger, is a pre-eminent cosmetic practice and medical spa providing vein treatments to patients in Spring, TX, The Woodlands, and other communities in this part of the country.
Immediate Post-Treatment Phase
The vein specialist and their staff will provide a few instructions for aftercare to the patient for the immediate post-treatment phase. The instructions may include guidelines for everyday skin care and apprising the patient of the normal or expected symptoms. They will inform the patient about the potential signs of complications so that the patient remains alert about such a situation and seeks timely medical attention.
Temporary post-treatment symptoms may include reddish skin, mild bruising in some of the treated areas, minor discoloration of the skin, and occasional blisters. These side effects typically resolve on their own within a few days, and will not require any specific medical treatment.
Although in most cases, the spider veins or varicose veins will be eliminated in a single treatment session, but in some cases, a few stubborn veins may still remain visible after the first treatment. This may be noticed within a few weeks as the patient returns to the specialist’s office for a follow-up and review. Different treatment approaches or a combination of treatments may be applied to eliminate the remaining veins in a second treatment session.
Precautions during Recovery
In the first few weeks following the vein treatment, the patient will be required to wear special stockings for most part of the day. This will help to ensure that the treated veins remain closed, and gradually get reabsorbed by the body. Stockings may also help to reduce the bruising. The provider may instruct the patient to avoid doing vigorous exercises for a few days until the healing is complete.
In the first few weeks after an injection or laser treatment to remove the diseased veins, the patient will be required to avoid direct sun exposure in the treated areas. A sunscreen cream of SPF 30 or higher should be used during the recovery phase. Tiny areas of scarring may sometimes appear after the treatment, but with proper care, these will eventually fade away.
Results will vary from one patient to another, but in most cases, the treated spider or varicose veins will be gone for good. Dr. Reger’s cosmetic practice and medical spa receives patients from Spring, TX, The Woodlands, and nearby areas for vein treatments.
