Fractional skin peel
Fractional laser skin peel may be an effective solution for people with blotches, wrinkles, scars, or lines on their face due to aging, acne, or spending too much time in the sun.
Fractional laser skin peel eliminates skin layer by layer in a precise manner. The new skin cells that develop during healing create a skin surface that is tauter, more youthful looking. The treatment can be performed independently or with other facial procedures.
Reger Vein and Skin Specialists, led by Dr. Gregg Reger, provides advanced skin care and medical spa treatments to patients in Spring, TX, The Woodlands, and surrounding communities.
How does it work?
Fractional laser skin peels, also called exfoliating therapies, are a quick and effective way to eliminate old and compromised skin cells and enhance the clarity and vitality of the skin.
The procedure involves delivering a laser beam to the skin’s surface to remove the outermost layer with precision.
This promotes the production of collagen to create a firmer, smoother appearance. This is a simple and minimally invasive procedure.
Microdermabrasion can eliminate ten microns of surface while a light “lunchtime peel” can remove 30 microns. A medium “weekend peel” can remove 60 microns. To administer medium peels, a topical anesthetic is applied to the face for 30 to 40 minutes.
After a laser peel, a cool compress may be applied to the skin to enhance comfort. The healing process usually lasts from two to five days, depending on the depth of the peel. The treated site will resemble varying levels of sunburn and then peel out to reveal new skin.
In addition, the patient must wear sunblock daily after the treatment and apply a healing ointment at night for the initial three days following the treatment.
What to Expect During and After the Procedure
A dermatologist will perform laser resurfacing as an outpatient procedure, which means that there will be no need for an overnight stay.
The dermatologist may treat wrinkles around the mouth, eyes, or forehead individually or treat the entire face. To treat small areas, they will numb the treatment sites with a local anesthetic and may also sedate the patient. The patient may require general anesthesia if their entire face is undergoing treatment.
The treatment of only certain areas of the face takes around 30 to 45 minutes while full face treatment takes up to two hours to complete.
After the laser procedure, the doctor will bandage the treated sites. The patient will need to clean the treated sites four to five times a day after 24 hours and then apply an ointment such as petroleum jelly to prevent the formation of scabs.
It is normal to experience inflammation after laser skin resurfacing. The doctor may prescribe steroids to manage the inflammation around the eyes. Sleeping in an elevated position can also ease inflammation.
Recovery
The patient may experience stinging or itching for 12 to 72 hours after the procedure. The skin will become dry and peel after around five to seven days of the laser resurfacing treatment.
The healing usually takes 10 to 21 days, depending on the issue that was treated. After the skin heals, the patient can wear oil-free makeup to minimize the redness, which typically subsides in two to three months.
The patient should limit their time in the sun, especially between 10 am and 2 pm as well as wear protective clothing such as pants, long-sleeved shirts, and a wide-brimmed hat.
It is also essential to keep the new skin well moisturized. In case the patient uses Retin A or glycolic acid products, they should be able to start using them again after around six weeks or when the dermatologists allow their use.
