Sclerotherapy is a minimally invasive treatment option for spider veins. This procedure generally does not hurt, and most patients report feeling just a small pinching sensation. During your consultation, your treatment provider will describe what you should expect during your sclerotherapy procedure. Reger Vein and Skin Specialists, led by Dr. Gregg Reger, provide sclerotherapy and other medical spa services to patients in The Woodlands, Spring, Houston, TX, and surrounding communities.
What is Sclerotherapy?
Sclerotherapy is the most common treatment for improving the look of spider veins. This treatment can also reduce the pain, discomfort, inflammation, and stinging that may be associated with spider veins. Sclerotherapy is a minimally invasive treatment in which a chemical solution is injected into the spider vein. The solution causes the veins to swell and seal closed, stopping the blood flow and allowing the vein to dissolve within a few weeks.
Treatment
Sclerotherapy is performed in-office, without the use of anesthesia. This procedure can take between 15 and 30 minutes, depending on the size of the area and the number of veins being treated. It might be necessary to inject a single vein more than once and treatments need to be spaced out every few weeks or months. During treatment, the patient will lie on their back with their legs slightly raised. The treatment provider will disinfect the treatment area, then inject the veins with the solution. There may be some discomfort, such as slight stinging or cramps, when the needle is inserted into the vein. If any of these sensations occur, you should inform your provider. After the veins are injected, treatment is completed.
Recovery
It is important to keep active and walk around following your procedure to prevent blood clots from forming. Patients may resume their normal activities on the same day. Your provider may ask you to avoid sun exposure and wear compression stockings to help with your recovery.
