What are IPL Photofacials?
Intense Pulsed Light, or IPL, is a popular light based treatment treatment used to correct and reduce the appearance of multiple skin imperfections and conditions, including:
- Facial redness
- Light acne scars
- Rosacea
- Broken capillaries
- Age or liver spots
- Hyperpigmentation
- And more!
Not all aspects of sun damage and discoloration will respond to this treatment. The best way to find out if IPL photofacials are the best choice for you is to schedule a consultation with Dr. Reger and our medical team.
How Does IPL Work?
This is a comfortable, well-tolerated treatment that involves pulses of light delivered to the skin. We use a topical numbing agent and cool air for a comfortable treatment. The light penetrates below the skin’s surface, targeting skin imperfections at their source by clearing pigmentation and closing broken capillaries.
How Many Sessions Will I Need?
The majority of patients need only one treatment, but the number of IPL photofacials you can expect depends on your unique condition and aesthetic goals. While patients see visible improvement with the first treatment, more than one session may be needed for maximum results. These options will be discussed with you during your consultation.
IPL photofacials are a “lunchtime” procedure, offering targeted skin clearance in as little as 25 minutes. Busy men and women who are seeking visible skin improvement but do not have a lot of time to devote to treatment may be good candidates for this procedure.
Is There Any Downtime?
One of IPL’s main benefits is its ability to penetrate below the skin surface without removing or injuring the outermost layer or connective tissues. This treatment targets red and brown pigmentation and stimulates the skin’s inflammatory response. Following the procedure, there may be a slight redness developed on the surface. Additionally, the pigmentation may darken as it migrates to the surface and is shed in about 1-2 weeks. This mild reaction is temporary and can be covered up with liquid foundation or concealer if desired.
